The role of the horse is often overlooked when we study the American Civil War. Union and Confederate armies literally ran on horsepower. From armaments to logistics, horses played a key role in transporting cannons, ammunition, engineering equipment, medical supplies, and men. Horses have been a viable military weapons system for more than 3,000 years. They carried many famous—and infamous—commanders into battle, and sometimes into glory. Some horses even became famous themselves.
